West African drum beats emanated from the room as hundreds of parents and children watched, captivated by the intricate rhythms. Led by master drummer Bolokada Conde, around 20 drummers played together to create a sound unique to traditional African music. But unlike Conde, these drummers did not hail from West Africa. They were elementary students from the Champaign-Urbana area.

With recent bullying tragedies dominating news headlines, and the federal government organizing its first-ever Bullying Prevention Summit in August, a once-shrugged "part of growing up" has sparked a national dialogue. Researchers in the College of Education seek to stamp out student harassment by reaching into classrooms to evaluate, to understand, and most importantly to prevent another tragedy.

With trips planned on three different continents, students are signed up to expand their knowledge of education and share what they have learned at Illinois around the globe in Argentina, Turkey and Morocco.

2010 - As a special education teacher in an elementary school, Jessica Zanton witnessed firsthand how detrimental discriminatory language such as the word "retard" can be. To combat this, she and her students handed out stickers and buttons last year to the staff at her school as part of the first "Spread the Word to End the Word" event.

After learning that one classmate's family had crafted a quilt for earthquake victims in Haiti, Rebecca Johnson's preschool students voiced their intent to do the same with a patchwork of burlap, paper squares and buttons. In the end, however, the students brainstormed a different plan.
