  • Four faculty to be honored at AERA annual meeting: three as Fellows and one as outstanding reviewer

    Three professors in the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership have been invited to be inducted as an American Educational Research Association (AERA) Fellow: department head and Gutgsell professor James Anderson, William Trent, and Anne Haas Dyson.   • C&I students and fourth graders experience shared learning through 'Spirit of Uganda'

    Students from Liora Bresler’s C&I 581 class got the chance to see how fourth-graders learn–not through typical classroom observation–but through a shared experience. Students from both the U of I and Thomas Paine Elementary School in Urbana attended "Spirit of Uganda" at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in February 2012.

  • HRD study finds that fun, incentives both essential in motivating workers' online learning

    College of Education at Illinois professor Wenhao David Huang collaborated with graduate students Sun Joo Yoo and Seung Hyun Caleb Han on researching e-training initiatives. They found that companies need to focus on making programs enjoyable and mentally stimulating for employees whenever possible, and offering extrinsic incentives such as pay increases and promotions when employees need extra motivation.

  • EPOL Professor William Trent selected to give Wallace Foundation Lecture for AERA

    William Trent, a professor of EPOL in the College of Education at Illinois, was selected to give the 2012 Wallace Foundation Lecture by the American Educational Research Association (AERA). The lecture was given on the first day of the AERA Annual Meeting, which was held April 13-17 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The theme of the meeting was “Non Satis Scire: to Know is not Enough.”

  • EPOL Department Head James Anderson to be presented with Lifetime Achievement Award by American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education

    The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) presented its 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award to James D. Anderson, Ph.D., William and Jane Marr Gutgsell Professor and head of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Education Policy, Organization and Leadership Department. The prestigious award, which recognizes an individual's distinguished and outstanding lifetime contributions to the educator preparation profession, was presented February 17 at AACTE's 64th Annual Meeting in Chicago.

  • Enhancing cognition in older adults also changes personality

    A program designed to boost cognition in older adults also increased their openness to new experiences, researchers report, demonstrating for the first time that a non-drug intervention in older adults can change a personality trait once thought to be fixed throughout the lifespan. The research was led by Elizabeth Stine-Morrow, professor in Educational Psychology and chair of Cognitive Science of Teaching and Learning.

  • EPOL doctoral student Laura English celebrates 70th birthday

    Laura English, who turned 70 on December 14, 2011, has surpassed the original goals others had for her by leaps and bounds. She is a doctoral student in Philosophy of Education in EPOL (at the University of Illinois) and has been enrolled in higher education courses for some part of every decade since the 1960s.
