Michael Parrish, an undergraduate academic adviser in the College of Education at Illinois, has been awarded the Larine Y. Cowan “Make a Difference” Award from the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access. Parrish, an active member in many organizations on campus, was given this award in the category of Advocacy for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) Affairs.

Michaelene Ostrosky, department head and Goldstick Family Scholar in the Department of Special Education at the College of Education at Illinois, is in the final stages of running a $3 million grant from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). Her research has focused on establishing the efficacy of "Special Friends" as an effective class-wide program that improves the social acceptance of children with disabilities.

The College of Education at Illinois is expanding its presence and outreach in Asia through a new program called the Greater China Initiative. The purpose of the Initiative, which allows for a College staff member to be based in Shanghai for the 2012-13 academic year, is to advance both the global influence and the international impact of the College of Education by promoting faculty expertise, undergraduate and graduate degree programs, non-degree certificate programs, contract projects, and alumni events there.
