Christopher Lubienski, associate professor of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership at the College of Education at Illinois, was interviewed for an AFP article about homeschooling gains, which was posted on Google News. He said there have always been Americans unhappy with public education for theological or cultural reasons, and he estimated that two-thirds of children are homeschooled for religious or moral reasons. Lubienski's research centers on public and private interests in education, including the use of market mechanisms such as choice and competition to improve schooling.

Children’s social goals at the beginning of a school year may predict whether they’ll be more popular – or less popular – by the end of that academic year, a new study conducted at the University of Illinois suggests. The study was co-written by Philip Rodkin, a professor of child development in the Department of Educational Psychology at the College of Education.

The 2012 conference "Experimental and Empirical Approaches to Politeness and Impoliteness" opened on August 29 and will run through August 31. The conference, an international and interdisciplinary event dedicated to how perceptions of politeness and impoliteness are shaped through language and affect the utterance interpretation process, is the first of its kind in the U.S.

An art exhibition opening Aug. 30, 2012, in the Murphy Gallery at the University YMCA will feature drawings and paintings created by inmates of the Danville Correctional Center, a medium- to high-security prison for men. The exhibition was coordinated by five prisoners enrolled in the Education Justice Project, part of the College of Education at Illinois.
