2012 - Nearly 100 science teachers from around the state learned new and innovative K-12 science content and instructional approaches on the University of Illinois campus. Taking part in the National Science Foundation grant EnLiST (Entrepreneurial Leadership in STEM Teaching and learning) Summer Institutes, they also gained entrepreneurial leadership skills to bring to their classrooms and schools.

Timothy Reese Cain, assistant professor in Education Policy, Organization and Leadership at the University of Illinois, received a Spencer Foundation Small Grant for his research on faculty unions. The $40,000 grant's award period started June 1, and the grant's work is part of a larger book project currently underway about the history of faculty unions spanning 1918-1981.

The Office of International Programs at the College of Education at Illinois has been busy initiating, developing, and finalizing several partnerships with educational institutions in China and Taiwan. One such initiative in Shanghai, China, supported in part by campus resources and by the Yew Chung Education Foundation, allows for a College representative to work and live there for the fiscal year 2012-13.

The partnership of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. with American Public University to provide online college degree programs to Walmart’s U.S. workforce has generated skepticism among some in academia. The arrangement, however, reflects growing trends in employee development as organizations struggle to remain competitive in a global marketplace and adapt to rapid-fire technological change with several generations of workers on board that have wide disparities in skills, said Jessica Li, a faculty member in the College of Education at the University of Illinois.
