Higher education has become more important as a path toward upward mobility, an increasingly crucial conduit to a better life for the middle class in a changed world. That’s according to the testimony of Jennifer Delaney, an assistant professor in the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership, who spoke about college affordability at the Illinois State Senate committee of the whole session on June 16.

Illinois’ guaranteed-tuition law is causing tuition rates at the state’s public colleges and universities to escalate faster than they would if schools were allowed to adjust tuition rates annually, according to analyses by Professor Jennifer A. Delaney of the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership and Tyler D. Kearney, an associate director of the Office for Planning and Budgeting.

The College of Education held its convocation ceremony at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, May 16, 2015, to celebrate and mark the outstanding academic milestones of its newest alumni. Graduates of on-campus, online, and off-campus degree and certificate programs were recognized for their accomplishments before standing to shift their mortar board tassels from right to left, signifying the completion of their education.

Education reform policies that penalize struggling schools for poor standardized test scores may hinder—not improve—students’ college readiness, if a school’s instructional focus becomes improving its test scores. This was the conclusion of a new study that explored efforts to promote a college-going culture at one Texas high school.
