In a study of white teachers’ sense of belongingness at their schools, EPOL assistant professor Jennifer L. Nelson found that these teachers were often ill-equipped for discussions about racial issues with Black colleagues and students because they had little prior experience thinking about or confronting race in their family, educational and previous work environments.

Jon Hale (Education Policy, Organization & Leadership/Curriculum & Instruction) is a 2023-24 HRI Faculty Fellow. Hale’s research, “I Pledge Allegiance: A History of Racist Ideas, Textbooks, and Teaching in the United States School System” provides critical historical analysis of recent efforts to control the curriculum in schools. This project builds upon the historiography around the “culture wars” and the deeply politicized nature of K-12 curriculum by reexamining aspects of the history of United States public education.

At 48, I’m known simply as “Major” to more than a hundred members of the Marine Corps JROTC program at Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, Va. I was honored to be named Fairfax County’s “Outstanding Secondary New Teacher of 2023” for helping our program’s cadets become the fine young Americans they are.
