Jarrett Lewis is developing ongoing mental health services to help Black youths process violent and racial trauma—and flourish despite that trauma. He is partnering with Champaign schools now and hopes to expand his offering at other schools as well.

Beckman Institute researchers, led by College of Education professor emerita Liz Stine-Morrow and with help from the Champaign Public Library, investigated the potential benefits of reading in improving memory. They found that regular, engaged leisure reading can strengthen memory skills in older adults, laying the groundwork for better practices in preserving our mental abilities as we age.

Through Neville’s research, her teaching, and her efforts in a number of leadership roles and capacities, she has directly and indirectly educated and empowered thousands of people—of all colors—in the realities of structural racism and ways for Blacks and other people of color to not only cope with racist attitudes, acts, and structures, but to heal and thrive in a world where racial injustice and oppression are the norm.

Fifty-three fifth-graders from Garden Hills Elementary School in Champaign enjoyed a fun-filled, four-hour tour of the University of Illinois campus in early November, starting at the College of Education and taking in and learning about many of the campus’s renowned buildings and features.

Under a new Illinois law, children up to age three who are involved in the state’s child welfare system are now automatically eligible for early intervention services such as speech or behavioral therapy that have the potential to mitigate the effects of these adverse experiences and establish the foundations for healthy development.
