She earned her Master's degree in Learning Sciences and Technologies from the University of Pennsylvania and her undergraduate degree in Computer Science Engineering from Bangalore University in India.

In January 2024, Filkins, ’98 LAS, Ed.M. ’10 C&I, Ed.D. ’17 C&I, began in a new role as program coordinator for all four of Curriculum and Instruction’s teacher preparation programs: early childhood, elementary, middle grades, and secondary education. Additionally, as an adjunct instructor for the College of Education, he continues to teach sections of CI 473: Disciplinary Literacy and other literacy related courses.

She is also a University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign alumna, earning her B.S. in Speech and Hearing Science in 2004. Gabriel Rodriguez studied Iowa's controversial 2021 H.F. 802 law that bans instruction on divisive concepts such as race and gender. In his study, Rodriguez finds that it has made teachers' jobs more difficult, has made them feel isolated and watched, and has, in turn, led to teacher retention rates dropping.
