A two-time Illinois alumna, Beard completed her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the College of Education and her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She received her master’s degree in Counseling and Counselor Education from Indiana University, Bloomington.

In 2016, Allen was awarded her doctoral degree in Special Education from the University of Missouri. She is also a University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign alumna, earning her B.S. in Speech and Hearing Science in 2004. Allen previously worked for Special School District of St. Louis County (Missouri) as an elementary school speech-language pathologist.

Gabriel Rodriguez studied Iowa's controversial 2021 H.F. 802 law that bans instruction on divisive concepts such as race and gender. In his study, Rodriguez finds that it has made teachers' jobs more difficult, has made them feel isolated and watched, and has, in turn, led to teacher retention rates dropping.
